Safety first

If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911. If a power line is down, stay well away from it and from anything it touches, including fences, cars and puddles. Keep children and pets back, treat the line as live and call 911 and Xcel Energy. If you smell burning near an outlet, a switch or the panel, see sparks, or find an outlet that is hot to the touch, stop using it and keep people away. Switch off that breaker, or the main breaker, only if you can reach the panel safely and you are standing on a dry floor with dry hands. Never touch anything wet, scorched or buzzing, and do not open the panel cover. Then call us.

What counts as an emergency

Call right away, at any hour, for a burning smell, sparking, an outlet or switch that is hot or smoking, a breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it, water near the panel or outlets, a service mast or meter pulled loose by a storm or a falling limb, or lights in one half of the house going bright while the other half dims. Losing power to a sump pump, a medical device or the furnace in freezing weather is an emergency too. A single dead outlet or a light fixture that stopped working can usually wait for a regular appointment.

No power or partial power

First, check whether your neighbors have power. If the whole street is dark, it is a utility outage, and Xcel Energy is the right call. If only your house is out, look at the main breaker. If half the house is out, or lights get brighter and dimmer as appliances turn on, the cause may be a failing connection in the service or a lost neutral, which can damage electronics. Turn off sensitive equipment and call both the utility and us. The utility owns the line to your house. The meter base, the mast and the panel are usually the homeowner's to repair.

Storm and hail damage

Summer storms across Denver Metro bring wind, lightning and hail. A falling branch can tear the service line off the house and bend or pull out the mast. Lightning can damage electronics, a panel or a well pump. When the utility finds damage on the homeowner's side, it will usually not reconnect until an electrician has repaired it and, in many places, an inspector has signed off. We make the area safe, repair the mast, meter base or panel, pull the permit and coordinate the reconnection with the utility.

What happens when you call

A person answers, asks what is happening and tells you what to do while you wait. We send the nearest available electrician and give you an arrival time on the phone. On site, they make it safe first, which may mean shutting off a circuit or the main. Then they find the cause and quote the repair in writing before doing more than the make-safe work. After-hours rates are higher than daytime rates, and we tell you the rate on the phone before anyone drives out.

  • 4 out of 5 stars

A wind storm pulled the service mast off our garage at night. They made it safe, came back in the morning to rebuild it and dealt with the inspection and the utility. It took two days because of the inspection schedule, but they kept us in the loop.

  • 5 out of 5 stars

The kitchen breaker tripped every morning when the toaster and the kettle ran together. They split the counter outlets onto two circuits and replaced a worn GFCI. No more tripping.

  • 5 out of 5 stars

Our 1950s ranch had two-prong outlets almost everywhere. They grounded the circuits they could reach, added GFCI protection on the rest and explained the labels. Clear about what was needed now and what could wait.
